The only point where this new integration doesn't mesh well with legacy functionality is the Email feature in the Share tab. This feature lets you email a link to your Zip file, but works only using ZipSend, a WinZip service that requires its own account. With other services so well-integrated, there's no reason to make you use ZipSend exclusively for this-- but to put a Zip file on another service and email a link to it requires a series of different operations (you can still do it, just not as easily).

Setup/Signup

WinZip, despite its name, is now available for not only Windows XP through 8, but also for Mac OS X, Android, and iOS. The non-Windows versions, however, don't get the full functionality of the Windows version. You can download WinZip 17 as a free 45-day trial version before you buy. The evaluation version displays a banner ad and dialog asking you to purchase whenever you fire up the program. The installation also adds an Outlook plugin, which actually generated errors when I used Outlook to send emails.

Interface

The new WinZip's main window has the look of recent Microsoft Office interfaces, with a ribbon control bar. You can even dress WinZip in themes, but there's no Wizard view as there used to be and like that still offered by WinRAR.

Here is a quick example of how to create a Zip file (. zip or.zipx) using WinZip:

Open WinZip

Find and select files in the Files pane

Click Add to Zip

Click Save as in the Actions pane

Choose a target location for your file, type a name, and click Save

When working in an open Windows Explorer folder, the quickest way to zip files is to use the context menu; that is to right click on the files and choose one of the Add to options from the WinZip submenu.

In the WinZip submenu of the context menu that displays choose either:

Add to Zip file: (quick) To specify your own Zip file name, compression type, encryption, and/or choose conversion options

Add to [filename] zip( x): (quicker) Create a Zip file using the default compression method with a name as displayed in the menu; you can not specify other options with this method
